Today in History: British ban on cigarette ads on television in 1965

On this day in 1965, cigarette advertising was banned on British television, although commercials for loose tobacco and cigars continued until 1991. A similar anti-smoking initiative took place in the United States in 1970. Congress passed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act, banning all advertising of cigarettes on television and radio as of January 2, 1971.
