Today is National Red Rose Day

National Red Rose Day honors the flower that is a symbol of love and romance. Red roses were used in many early cultures as decorations in wedding ceremonies and wedding attire. It was through this practice that, over the years, the red rose became known as a symbol of love and romance. The tradition of giving red roses as the strongest message of love is still practiced today.

Today is Presidents Day

Today is Presidents Day

Presidents Day is a federal holiday which, in the United States, is observed on the third Monday in February. This day is set aside, by more and more of America’s population, to honor all of the past United States Presidents that have served our country. Two of our nation’s greatest Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, are brought to mind as we celebrate this day. Their birth dates, which fall close to this same time, have been celebrated for decades with public ceremonies in Washington, D.C. and throughout the United States.

Today in History: Edward McKnight Kauffer born in 1890

127 years ago today, Edward McKnight Kauffer, one of Britain’s most influential poster artists and graphic designers between the wars, was born in Great Falls, Montana. Kauffer began his professional life as a painter in San Francisco and Chicago before studying in Paris (1913) and moving to London at the outbreak of World War I. Kauffer received his first poster commission for London Underground in 1915 and immediately embraced poster art as a form of visual communication. He designed 141 posters for the Underground and many more for clients like Shell or British Petroleum. His poster works brought the language of modern art to a large public. In 1937, the New York Museum of Modern Art held a one-man show of his work. Kauffer returned to the United States in 1940 where he produced posters for the Greek War Relief and the U.S. Treasury. After the war, he produced a series of posters for American Airlines and the New York Subway. Kauffer passed away in 1954 in New York.
