Today in History: Seville World’s Fair opens in 1992

The Universal Exposition of Seville (Expo ’92) took place from April 20 to October 12, 1992, on Cartuja Island in Seville, Spain. The theme for the Expo was “The Age of Discovery” and over 100 countries were represented. Almost 42 million people visited the fair. Expo’92 Seville was widely known for its massive site, held at the Isla de la Cartuja, reputed site of reference for Columbus for his voyage to the New World, and required at least several days to visit most of the Pavilions. It was also known for its numerous spectacular gates and bridges, and the diversity of transport within the Expo site from bus to ferry boat, to cable car and monorail. It also gave an impressive architectural tour of the world, with many countries vying for the position of the most inventive or creative Pavilion structure – outstanding amongst these was the Pavilion of Japan – the world’s largest wooden structure, the Pavilion of Morocco, a re-creation of a Moroccan Palace-Mansion, and the modernistic cube and sphere of the flagship Spanish Pavilion, to name a few.

Today in History: Expo in Brussels opens in 1958

On this day in 1958, Belgian King Baudouin I opened the first World’s Fair after the Second World War in Brussels, Belgium. The exhibit’s main themes were innovations in aerospace and nuclear energy. The Expo 1958 was attended by approx. 41 million people. Symbol of the fair was the “Atomium,” a 102 meter (335 ft.) model of an iron molecule. The Soviet Union introduced a model of the first Soviet satellite, a facsimile of Sputnik, which was regarded as a direct insult to the United States during the time of the Cold War. The satellite disappeared mysteriously during the fair and the Soviets accused the US of stealing it. The United States in turn was planning on constructing a nuclear power plant on the exhibition grounds, close to the city center and the Royal Palace. The Belgian King intervened and asked that the power plant be built at a different location.

Today is ‘Save The Elephant’ Day

Today is ‘Save The Elephant’ Day

They might be wildlife icons, but, sadly, elephants are in crisis. Save The Elephant Day is a chance to show our love and support for these much-loved giants and raise awareness of the threats to their future in both Africa and Asia, ranging from ivory poachers and traffickers to loss of habitat. Also known as World Elephant Day, the occasion was founded by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, based in Thailand, working together with Canadian film-maker Patricia Sims. The launch of this international initiative in 2012 saw the release of the documentary film ‘Return to the Forest’, narrated by Star Trek legend William Shatner. The ideal way to mark the day is to donate to a charity helping elephants or organize an event in aid of these beautiful but threatened beasts. You could also watch a wildlife film about elephants or sign a petition to raise awareness. (source: http://www.daysoftheyear.com)
