Today in History: Alexander Graham Bell born in 1847

172 years ago today, the American scientist, inventor, and engineer was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Bell studied at the University of Edinburgh. In 1871, he went to Boston to become a teacher for the deaf. Bell’s mother and wife were both deaf, which had a major influence on his work. From 1873 to 1877, he worked as a professor of speech physiology. His research on hearing and speech led him to experiment with hearing devices which culminated in the development of the telephone in 1876. His invention attracted a great deal of attention at the 1776 Philadelphia International Exhibition, but over the years, Bell was not much involved in the further development of the phone. It is said that that Bell refused to have a telephone in his study, feeling it was an intrusion on his work as a scientist. Bell died in 1822 at the age of 75.

Today is International #PolarBear Day

Recognized since 2011, Polar Bear Day is meant to raise awareness of the declining number of polar bears worldwide, largely believed to be a result of global warming and the loss of their natural habitat. As cuddly as they look as newborns, polar bears can grow to be 9 feet tall and weigh up to 1400 pounds.

Today in History: World’s largest railway station established in 1913

106 years ago today, the world’s largest train station was inaugurated in New York City. It took 10 years to construct Grand Central Station, the gigantic, multi-level railway cathedral. The station quickly became one of the most famous buildings in New York. With some 500,000 visitors a day, Grand Central remains the city’s busiest building today. All long-distance transit is handled on the upper floor, regional traffic on the lower level. The train station is known for its huge waiting rooms and its excellent shopping. In 1978, the New York landmark only narrowly escaped demolition after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, after which it has been completely renovated.

Today in History: 1st Official Basketball Game in 1892

Today in History: 1st Official Basketball Game in 1892

On January 20, 1892, the first official game of basketball was played at a YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York. The game was created a month earlier by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith wrote the sport’s original 13 rules to create a game that could be played in YMCA gyms during the cold winter months. Initially, teams were made up of nine players attempting to toss a soccer ball into peach baskets secured to the balconies at the ends of a gymnasium. When a basket was made, the game was paused while a man with a ladder had to retrieve the ball. Following the first public matches in 1892, popularity of the new game spread quickly. The first intercollegiate match was played in 1895 and the first professional league was founded in 1898. Nets did not replace the sport’s original peach baskets until 1905.
