Today in History: Graf Zeppelin heads for the USA in 1928

90 years ago today, the legendary airship LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin launched its first intercontinental flight to the United States. The airship traversed 6,168 miles (9,926 km) during its 111 hour journey. It flew over New York at 4 pm on October 15 before it landed at the Lakehurst Naval Station. It stayed in the U.S. for two weeks and arrived safely back in Germany on November 1. The poster below is a 1930s travel poster for the Graf Zeppelin designed by Ottomar Anton.

Today in History: North German Lloyd founded in 1857

161 years ago today, the German shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) (North German Lloyd) was founded by Henrich Meier and Eduard Crüsemann in Bremen. NDL became one of the most important German shipping companies of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The passenger shipping line served North- and South America, East Asia and Autralia. In 1970, NDL merged with Hamburg America Line (HAPAG) to form Hapag-Lloyd AG.

Today is Polar Bear Swim Day

Today is Polar Bear Swim Day

Since 1920, a group of hardy swimmers has celebrated New Year’s Day by plunging into the frigid waters of Vancouver’s English Bay. As crazy as it sounds, the custom has spread to the United States, where chapters of the American Polar Bear Club have established themselves in a number of states known for their cold winter weather. In Sheboygan, Wisconsin, more than 300 daring swimmers—many of them in costume—brave the ice floes of Lake Michigan to take their New Year’s Day swim. About 3,000 to 4,000 spectators stay bundled up on the beach and watch. The Sheboygan event has gradually expanded into a day-long festival, with a brat-fry, a costume contest, and live entertainment. (Source: thefreedictionary.com)

Today in History: First Zeppelin Flight

Today in History: First Zeppelin Flight

On July 2, 1900, the first zeppelin flight took place over Germany’s Lake Constance (the Bodensee). Leading the flight was no other than Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the designer and builder of the first rigid airship in the world, the LZ 1 (LZ stands for Luftschiff Zeppelin or Zeppelin Airship). Powered by two Daimler engines with 28 PS, the airship consisted of a 128-meter-long aluminum construction which was carried by hydrogen cells. While the zeppelin may be considered a spectacular aircraft, it was but only an episode in the conquest of the skies by humans. The size and especially the highly explosive gas mixture limited the use of the otherwise elegant aircraft. The catastrophic explosion of the “Hindenburg” on May 6, 1937 was the sad climax and the end of zeppelins.
