Today is International Animal Rights Day

Today is International Animal Rights Day
Every year International Animal Rights Day is celebrated on December 10. This observance coincides with the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declared in 1948, and this has been made deliberately.
On December 10, 1948 the UN General Assembly adopted and declared the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to prevent the repetition of World War II and concentration camps. But some years ago activists demanded expansion of the Declaration, stating that animals also have rights not to suffer pain and die because of human activity. At that time the term of speciesism was coined in order to talk about discrimination of the sentient beings due to the species they belong to. Animals can’t protect themselves from people, who think that they are superior just because they were born like this. Observance of International Animal Rights Day draws public attention to the issues of speciesism and discrimination. Annually numerous campaigns are organized on December 10 in order to recognize animal rights, stop deliberate cruelty and killing animals.

Today in History: Jim Morrison born in 1943

Today in History: Jim Morrison born in 1943

75 years ago today, James Douglas “Jim” Morrison, one of the most iconic and influential frontmen in rock music history and lead vocalist of the Doors, was born. Morrison co-founded the Doors during the summer of 1965 in Venice, California. The band spent two years in obscurity until shooting to prominence with their #1 single in the United States, “Light My Fire.” Morrison recorded a total of six studio albums with the Doors, all of which sold well and received critical acclaim. Morrison developed an alcohol dependency during the 1960s, which at times affected his performances on stage. He died in 1971 at the age of 27 in Paris. Though the Doors recorded two more albums after Morrison’s death, the loss of him crippled the band and they split up in 1973. In 1993, Jim Morrison, as a member of the Doors, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Today in History: Walt Disney born in 1901

Today in History: Walt Disney born in 1901

The pioneer of the American animation industry, Walter Elias Disney was born 117 years ago today in Chicago. , Disney got a job as a commercial illustrator at the age of 18. He moved to California in the early 1920s and set up the Disney Brothers Studio with his brother Roy. With Ub Iwerks, he developed the character Mickey Mouse in 1928, his first highly popular success. As the studio grew, Disney became more adventurous, introducing synchronized sound, full-color three-strip Technicolor, feature-length cartoons and technical developments in cameras. The results, seen in features such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio, Fantasia (both 1940), Dumbo (1941) and Bambi (1942), furthered the development of the animated film.

In the 1950s, Disney expanded into the amusement park industry, and in 1955 he opened Disneyland. To fund the project he diversified into television programs, such as Walt Disney’s Disneyland and The Mickey Mouse Club. In 1965, he began development of Disney World, the heart of which was to be the “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow” (EPCOT). Disney was a heavy smoker throughout his life, and died of lung cancer in December 1966 before either the park or the EPCOT project were completed. Source: wikipedia.org
