Today is National Picnic Day!

Today is National Picnic Day!

People have been eating their meals outside in the beauty of nature for centuries. In fact, our modern-day idea of a picnic evolved from Medieval hunting feasts and Victorian garden parties. These were usually quite sophisticated affairs, which involved multiple courses and elaborate preparations. During the early 19th century a group of wealthy London citizens formed “The Picnic Society” to promote picnics as social gatherings. These picnics were potlucks, and each participant also had to provide a share of the entertainment. The society members drank from crystal goblets and listened to a live string quartet while eating their meal! Today, picnics are usually casual meals enjoyed on a comfortable picnic blanket. Today is National Auctioneers Day

Today is National Auctioneers Day

We simply could not resist: Going once … Going twice … SOLD !

National Auctioneers Day is observed every year on the third Saturday in April. According to the National Auctioneers Association, it is estimated nearly a quarter-trillion dollars in goods and services are sold by professional auctioneers each year. The sales method is over 2,000 years old; in the United States, it developed during the Civil War. The rapidly punctuated chatter of some auctioneers not only gets the job done but can make it entertaining as well. Across the country, auction houses offer anything from livestock to automobiles. Sometimes, some very bizarre (and often quite expensive) items might surface, incl. a false set of Winston Churchill’s teeth that fetched over $23,000 back in 2010.

We just stick to vintage posters for now and hope you will join us for our June auction, which happens to include the above Leonetto Cappiello gem. Happy bidding.

Today in History: Rome founded 753 B.C.

Today in History: Rome founded 753 B.C.

The beginnings of the history of Rome are obscure. Humans have lived in the area known as Rome for at least the last 6,000 years. According to legend, on April 21, 753 B.C., twin brothers Romulus and Remus found Rome on the site where they were suckled by a she-wolf as orphaned infants. It is said that Romulus killed his twin brother, Remus, and named the city after himself. However, this myth supposedly originated sometime during the fourth century and it is thus not really clear where the name Rome originally comes from. Was it really 21 April 753 BC?

Today in History: Expo in Brussels opens in 1958

Today in History: Expo in Brussels opens in 1958

61 years ago today, Belgian King Baudouin I opened the first World’s Fair after the Second World War in Brussels, Belgium. The exhibit’s main themes were innovations in aerospace and nuclear energy. The Expo 1958 was attended by approx. 41 million people. Symbol of the fair was the “Atomium,” a 102 meter (335 ft.) model of an iron molecule. The Soviet Union introduced a model of the first Soviet satellite, a facsimile of Sputnik, which was regarded as a direct insult to the United States during the time of the Cold War. The satellite disappeared mysteriously during the fair and the Soviets accused the US of stealing it. The United States in turn was planning on constructing a nuclear power plant on the exhibition grounds, close to the city center and the Royal Palace. The Belgian King intervened and asked that the power plant be built at a different location.

Today is ‘Save The Elephant’ Day

Today is ‘Save The Elephant’ Day

They might be wildlife icons, but, sadly, elephants are in crisis. Save The Elephant Day is a chance to show our love and support for these much-loved giants and raise awareness of the threats to their future in both Africa and Asia, ranging from ivory poachers and traffickers to loss of habitat. Also known as World Elephant Day, the occasion was founded by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation, based in Thailand, working together with Canadian film-maker Patricia Sims. The launch of this international initiative in 2012 saw the release of the documentary film ‘Return to the Forest’, narrated by Star Trek legend William Shatner. The ideal way to mark the day is to donate to a charity helping elephants or organize an event in aid of these beautiful but threatened beasts. You could also watch a wildlife film about elephants or sign a petition to raise awareness. (source: http://www.daysoftheyear.com)
