She was the goddess of the hippie movement – and is considered, by many, the best white blues singer in the world. Janis Joplin celebrated her greatest success in 1969 at Woodstock. Only one year later, she died of a heroin overdose.
Today in History: Frank Zappa born in 1940
75 years ago today, Frank Vincent Zappa, the American musician, songwriter, and film director was born. In his 30+ year career, Zappa composed rock, jazz, and orchestral music and directed films and music videos. Zappa produced more than 60 albums and released most of them with his band Mothers of Invention. His music was usually politically charged and often aimed at offending various religious and political conservative groups. Zappa was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1991 but continued working at his Hollywood Hills home until he died on December 4, 1993.
Today in History: Jimi Hendrix dies in 1970
45 years ago today, American musician Jimi Hendrix died after collapsing at a party in London. He was 27 years old. Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington, but rose to fame in Britain with his band the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He was arguably one of the most influential guitarists of the 1960s and perhaps in the history of rock music.
Today in History: Live Aid
40 years ago today, the global rock concert Live Aid opened. The event was held simultaneously at London’s Wembley Stadium as well as Philadelphia’s John F. Kennedy Stadium. It was organized by musicians Bob Geldorf and Midge Ure to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africa. On the same day, concerts inspired by the project took place in other arenas around the world, including Australia and Germany. The 16-hour super concert was one of the largest satellite-linked and television broadcasts of all time with an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion across 150 nations.
