Today is National Cat Day

Today is National Cat Day

National Cat Day was initiated by Pet Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, in 2005 to make the the public recognize the enormous number of cats that need rescuing. They were first domesticated in the Middle East’s Fertile Crescent as early as 12,000 years ago. When humans relied on hunting as their main source of food, dogs were most useful – but when the first agricultural societies emerged, cats became invaluable. Domesticated cats became responsible for keeping grain stores free of mice and other rodents. Today, cats can be found in 34% of American households, making them the most popular house pet in the United States.

Today is National Liqueur Day

Today is National Liqueur Day

A liqueur is a strong alcoholic beverage that has been sweetened with herbs, fruits, nuts, cream, or spices. Liqueurs are traditionally served as after-dinner drinks or mixed with coffee. The word “liqueur” comes from the Latin word “liquifacere,” which means “to dissolve or melt.” As early as 400 BC, the Egyptians and Greeks distilled wine to produce fortified spirits. They sweetened this concoction with cinnamon and honey—a combination that we still use today to create mead. In the thirteenth century, European monks and alchemists perfected the distillation process used to create liqueur. The liquid was primarily used for medicinal purposes.

Today is National Teddy Bear Day

Today is National Teddy Bear Day

National Teddy Bear Day is observed annually on September 9th.  We have all had a special cuddly teddy as a child.  Some of us still have our teddy bear from our childhood.  Whether or not you still have your childhood teddy, today is the perfect day to celebrate your childhood friend! The name Teddy Bear originated in 1902 after American President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear cub while hunting in Mississippi.  This incident made national news and became a classic through Clifford Berryman’s cartoon of the event published in the Washington Post on November 16th, 1902. The cartoon inspired New York store owner Morris Michtom to create a new toy.  Michtom wrote President Roosevelt to ask permission to name the new toy a “Teddy Bear.”

Today is National Vinyl Record Day

Today is National Vinyl Record Day

The vintage vinyl is almost as much of a classic as the bands themselves. Vinyl used to be the main means for commercial distribution of pop music from the 1950s through the early 1990s when the compact disk started to take over (which since has been replaced by digital downloads or streaming music). A vinyl record is also known as gramophone record, phonograph record or simply a record – an analog sound storage medium consisting of a flat disc which has an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. While vinyl left mainstream production in the early 1990s, it experienced a strong revival with collectors and audiophiles in the past decade.
