On this day in 1922, Vladimir Lenin, the Russian revolutionary, proclaims the establishment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) where Russia, Ukraine, Transcaucasia, and Belarus joined forces. The formal proclamation was made from the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre at the first All-Union Congress in Moscow. The Soviet Union thus began its way to become the second world power. At the end of 1991, it dissolved into individual republics again.
