Today in History: Lester Beall born in 1903!

American graphic designer Lester Thomas Beall (1903-1969) would have turned 115 today. Beall was one of the leading contributors to the modern movement in American 20th century graphic design. Beall was born in Kansas City and grew up in Chicago. He studied at the University of Chicago where he became interested in typography and Bauhaus design elements. He moved home and office to New York and then Connecticut in the mid-1930s where he began his career as an art director. Among his clients were the International Paper Company, Merrill Lynch, and the New York Hilton. Beall is perhaps best known for his poster series for the United States Government’s Rural Electrification Administration during the 1930s. He also created several posters for the United States Lines in the early 1950s.

Today in History: Graf Zeppelin died in 1917

101 years ago today, Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin was a German pioneer of airships. A former general and later aircraft manufacturer, Zeppelin provided both the brains and most of the investment money for the first successful rigid airship, the Zepplin LZ1. In July of 1900, Zeppelin made the first flight with the LZ1 in southern Germany. The dirigible remained in the air for 20 minutes before landing. On March 8, 1917, the great aviation pioneer died in Berlin.

Today in History: Rio de Janeiro founded in 1565

453 years ago today, the city of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro (River of January) was founded on the flat sandy beaches between Sugar Loaf and Morro Cara de Cao. The name of the city of Rio de Janeiro was based on a misunderstanding: in January 1502, Portuguese explorer Goncalo Coelho landed in the Guanabara Bay and thought its waters would be a large river. The town was originally settled by French Huguenots. The economic wealth of the city developed after gold and diamond discoveries between 1690 and 1720. Due to its port location, Rio de Janeiro established a flourishing trade with Portugal, thereby laying the foundation for the present size of the city that has a population of over 6 million people.

Today in History: Yellowstone Park established in 1872

Today in History: Yellowstone Park established in 1872

146 years ago today, President Grant signed the bill creating the nation’s first national park at Yellowstone.

Native Americans had lived and hunted in the region that would become Yellowstone for hundreds of years before the first Anglo explorers arrived. John Colter, a famous mountain man, was the first Anglo to travel through the area in the early 1800s. Before the Civil War, only a handful of trappers and hunters ventured into the area, and it remained largely a mystery. In 1869, the Folsom-Cook expedition made the first formal exploration, followed a year later by a much more thorough reconnaissance by the Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition. In 1871, geologist Ferdinand Hayden led a government sponsoired exploration and brought along William Jackson, a pioneering photographer, and Thomas Moran, a brilliant landscape artist, to make a visual record of the expedition. Their images provided the first visual proof of Yellowstone’s wonders and caught the attention of the U.S. Congress.

Early in 1872, Congress moved to set aside 1,221,773 acres of public land straddling the future states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho as America’s first national park. President Grant signed the bill into law on this day in 1872. The Yellowstone Act of 1872 designated the region as a public “pleasuring-ground,” which would be preserved “from injury or spoilation, of all timber, mineral deposits, natural curiosities, or wonders within.”

Today in History: Planes banned from flying over White House in 1935

83 years ago today, President Franklin D. Roosevelt banned all airplanes from flying over the White House. His reasoning? Supposedly, the planes were disrupting president’s sleep. The ban is still in effect today, serving a greater purpose of national security
